During the upcoming PHOTO VIENNA Festival, which starts on March 20, BLOW UP PRESS will present its latest book, Land by Lorenzo Castore. The full portfolio of the publishing house will be available at the Photobook Market accompanying the festival.
Land is the first book that BLOW UP PRESS plans to launch this year. This time, together with the Museum in Gliwice (co-publisher of the book), BUP invites to discover Silesia during an exceptional trip led by an Italian photographer Lorenzo Castore, who came to Silesia at the beginning of his career. He was looking for a place where theoretically nothing happens, where he could redefine his approach to photography after the experience he had gained during the war in Kosovo. He already knew that news photography - too fast, dictated by the media’s needs and not allowing to focus on the human being - did not suit him. It is not his style of work that requires concentration, retreat and close relationships with people. His 3-year-long stay in Silesia turned into a fascination with the place and the people whom he met, who accepted him like a family member, long-lost friend.
Lorenzo left the place changed, aware of what photography he wanted to deal with. After many years, invited by the Museum in Gliwice, he returned to Silesia to visit the places and people who had affected him so much. He portrayed them closely, without tricks, with attention. The resulting book proposes a new language, a different way of telling about Silesia. Its central point is portraits, testimonies of meetings, from the most fleeting ones, in the streets, courtyards and stations, to the most intimate, in private interiors, all loaded with powerful energy.
The festival programme includes several accompanying events. One of them will be Photobook Market (@ Österreichische Postsparkasse, Georg-Coch-Platz 2), where all lovers of photobooks could buy books produced by invited publishers and meet their favourite photographers at book signing sessions. BLOW UP PRESS stand will host book signings by Lorenzo Castore (Land), Hubert Humka (Death Landscapes) and Igor Pisuk (Deceitful Reverence).
Photo Book Exhibition & Award (@ Österreichische Postsparkasse, Georg-Coch-Platz 2, Vienna) will be another attraction of the festival. The exhibition will include another book with BUP logo on the cover - Deglet Nour by Tytus Grodzicki. And after the exhibition, the book will become part of OstLicht Gallery’s (Absberggasse 27, Vienna) publicly accessible photo book collection, also including books by Hubert Humka and Igor Pisuk.
