In Est et non est, Paweł Żak looks towards heaven - not simply as the sky above us, but as a place suspended between what we believe, what we remember and what we can never fully know.
The starting point is childhood: the naïve conviction that heaven might be reached with a snowball, or that God might reveal himself if only we looked upwards for long enough. Years later, Żak returns to that same direction of gaze, but with a very different kind of certainty. His photographs move between the tangible and the imagined, between belief and doubt, presence and absence.
Żak deliberately intervenes in his photographs, subtly altering their surfaces and appearance. As a result, the images resist being straightforward records of reality. They become fragments of memory - things that seem familiar but cannot quite be grasped. What appears to be a photograph of the world gradually becomes a photograph of our desire to find something beyond it.
The resulting book is a quiet, deeply personal meditation on faith, longing and the limits of perception. Heaven is not presented as a distant destination, but as something momentarily experienced within us: a feeling, a memory, a possibility.
The Special Edition brings one of these images beyond the book and into a physical, signed and numbered pigment print. With only 20 prints available of each of the two photographs, this edition offers a particularly intimate way of owning a work from Żak's meditation on what can be seen, imagined and believed.
The book is also available in a regular edition.
